MW2’s Breenbergh hotel map could land Activision & IW in a spot of legal hot water
A real world hotel in Amsterdam may look to take action against Activision & Infinity Ward after said location appeared in Modern Warfare 2.
As spotted by PC Gamer, Dutch media outlet de Volkskrant reports that the owners of the Conservatorium Hotel aren’t pleased with the hotel’s depiction, despite it getting a name change to ‘Breenburgh’.
As well as the name change, there’s a few minor differences between the real world location and the in-game map, but it looks like it’s not quite been enough for the hotel.
“We have taken note of the fact that the Conservatorium Hotel is undesirably the scene of the new Call of Duty” – hotel manager Roy Tomassen says in the interview with de Volkskrant (via Google Translate).
“More generally, we are not in favour of games that seem to encourage the use of violence. The game in no way reflects our core values and we regret our apparent and unwanted involvement.”
While the hotel hasn’t confirmed it’ll take legal action, it hasn’t ruled it out either – and is apparently still considering its next steps.
Modern Warfare 2 has had quite a string of bad luck when it comes to similarity issues between its maps and the real world of late, with this now being potentially the third instance in recent times.
During the beta, the game’s Formula 1 inspired Grand Prix map disappeared, despite previously being promised for the game. It returned under a new name, and with some other cosmetic tweaks.
Plus, earlier this week, fans noticed another map from the beta – the Valderas Museum – had also disappeared from the game’s launch list of maps, despite being a major fixture in the beta.
It should be noted, however, that at the time of writing Activision hasn’t confirmed in either case whether resemblances to real life locations or organisations were behind the changes and temporary removal of either map.
The studio is also yet to announce if it’ll make any changes to the Amsterdam or Breenburgh hotel maps as a result of this news. We’ll keep our eyes open and let you know if we hear an update.
