Learn more about DOLORES, the Apple II graphics library behind the recent release for the platform, Angry Birds
Not long ago, I posted about the development of Angry Birds for the Apple II, including the gameplay video showing it in all its glory!
One of the things that most impressed me when I saw Angry Birds was how low-resolution graphics could look so good on a game. It is not the only example of excellent low-res games out there, but it is undoubtedly one of the latest.
Angry Birds was built using DOLORES, a library that makes it easier to access and manipulate the double-LORES mode with 80 x 48 pixels in 16 colours available on the Apple IIe enhanced.
This graphics mode doesn’t have a lot of documentation available and even lacks more modern articles and websites talking about it. This gap is what DOLORES aims to fill out! Keep in mind that DOLORES offers & functions to be accessed via AppleSoft Basic, so no machine language is really required to get started.
If you are interested in creating games like the Apple II’s Angry Birds or even lovely demos using this superb and colourful resolution, a good start is to visit the 8 Bit Shack website. There is an article there that covers the basics of the library so you can get started.
