Netflix Boss Stands Firm: ‘We Have Never Canceled a Successful Show’

Netflix has been under fire more than ever in the recent year for canceling new shows after only one or two seasons. While devoted fans have protested against the cancellation of episodes such as Netflix has been under fire more than ever in the recent year for canceling new shows after only one or two seasons. While devoted fans have protested against the cancellation of episodes such as Inside Job, Warrior Nun, and The Midnight Club, it appears that their social media campaigns and protests by entitled fans have little sway over Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.

Sarandos stood by his decision to terminate many shows in an interview with Bloomberg, stating unequivocally that none of the canceled shows were popular enough to justify their continuation. When questioned if the cancellations were having an effect on his connections with the “creative community” as well as his audiences, Sarandos responded:

We have never canceled a successful show. A lot of these shows were well-intended but talk to a very small audience on a very big budget. The key to it is you have to be able to talk to a small audience on a small budget and a large audience at a large budget. If you do that well, you can do that forever.”

Anyone who has ever invested time and money in a new series just to find out it has been canceled feels a sense of wasted time and unhappiness, which is generally expressed on social media. As a result, some Netflix customers have made a conscious decision not to participate in new shows unless they know that the plug would not be pulled after only six or eight episodes. This is certainly a two-edged sword, because not watching a show in case it is canceled is likely to result in the show being canceled. Watching may have the same impact, leaving audiences feeling duped.

Although some shows, such as Cobra Kai, Lucifer and Manifest, have avoided cancellation after being rescued by Netflix, of all people, following their initial cancellations elsewhere, the list of big shows that have bitten the dust just keeps growing, with many of them not being given the option of building their audience over a handful of seasons. 1899 was one of the most recent shows to have its plug pulled prematurely. Despite being touted as a three-season series, the show’s cancellation surprised fans who expected another two seasons to complete the plot.

It’s unclear how many more series like this will be canceled in the coming year.
